I am starting this blog because I have way too much to say to be limited to 400 or 500 words in the newsletter, once a month. I will write this and post it on a fairly frequent basis, so check our website often.
5-18-2010 Blog. It has been quite some time since I took the time to write a blog so I will try to update everyone on the last few months. First of all I am still tobacco free after 4 months. I have gained weight but I have joined the YMCA and I should be ok. I do miss some of the people that I used to hang out with, but I can’t do the same things I used to because it tempts me to smoke. In many ways I am a different person than I was a year ago when I was elected the first time. I still have many of the same priorities now that I had then, though, and I still like being the Commander of our post. Several people have asked me if I wanted to move on up the ladder, and to be honest I’m not sure that I do. I am very happy where I am.As many of you know May has been and still is a very busy month for me. I went to Great Bend to the Department of Kansas Convention and Susan and I enjoyed that for the most part. I did get quite upset about the Auxiliary making the ALR leave their meeting because they would not take off their vests. In my opinion, most of these ladies belong to the Auxiliary because of the Rider’s and a few are willing to take the next step and help the Auxiliary. Then they get treated like second class citizens and are asked to take off the vests or leave the meeting. I was told that because the Auxiliary is not a Legion Program like the ALR and the SAL at I can’t do anything about what they do at their meetings. I am thankful that the Auxiliary at our post are not as bigoted as this woman was, and I hope that the ALR at our post will remember that the way to make changes is by showing up and voting in new people. That is what has happened on the Legion side and the ALR now has a majority on the Executive Board. I am very happy with the progress that our post has made. We have had several flag etiquette programs this month and we still have two more to do. We also have had many “School Awards” to give out this month. Most of you know that we fed all who wanted to come and eat at our post on Monday after the Patriot Guard funeral. I think that we fed more than 200 and we got $400.00 in donations so we did not lose too much money. Some things are more important than money and this was one of them. I got a request from the Boy Scout Leader last night to pay for one of the boys to go to camp this June. That will cost $300.00 and I told him I would bring it up with the Eboard and give him an answer before they go to camp.
Thanks for your support. John Rust, Commander.
