Lysle Rishel Post 68

Commanders notes April 2018

First I would like to remind everyone that April 7th is the 7th District Convention that will be held here at Post 68, where we will hold elections for 2018-2019 District Officers. We would love to see familiar faces from Post 68 in attendance for the one day Convention.

The April Post meeting, we will hold elections for our own Post Officers and two (2) Executive Board officer positions for 2018-2019. Positions that will be elected are Commander, 1st Vice and 2nd Vice Commander, Adjutant, Finance Officer, Chaplain, Sgt @ Arms, and the two Executive Board positions. Nominations are still open and if you would like to get a form see Bruce Branson, Mike Alexander, or John Harlow of the Nominations Committee.

We have had a great year, and are staying busy in the coming months with many upcoming events including school awards, memorial day program, NJCAA Tournament, and our scholarship pancake feed just to name a few. We are always looking for volunteers to help with projects and programs through The American Legion, if you’re interested please contact me at 620-899-0010 and we will get you involved.  This Post, like all others depends and runs on the help of volunteers and we cannot and could not do it with you, Thank You to all those that already do volunteer and those that are considering it.

Commanders notes for March 2018

We have been able to upgrade several areas of the Legion this year, including the flooring in the main hall restrooms, ice machine, keg cooler, and a freezer in the kitchen, among other things. None of the upgrades would have been possible without the kind donations and memorial funds that we have received this year from our members. We have several great things scheduled for later in the year including a Department homecoming, so we are starting our next big project which is remodeling the main hall, work days for this will be Mondays and Wednesdays and all are welcome to lend a hand.

April 7th is the 7th District Convention and will be held here at our post, also the Department Convention will be held here in Hutchinson so be on the lookout for that in the upcoming months. Now is also the time to fill out nomination forms for next year’s officers, we will need to fill 2 Executive Board Member positions and of course you can be a nominee for any elected post officer position. The election committee this year is headed by Bruce Branson, and also includes John Harlow and Mike Alexander, so see one of them for nomination forms.

We have some great upcoming activities and need volunteers to help make them great. We have the Scholarship tournament breakfast coming up, also School awards will be just around the corner.  If you would like to help with either of these events please call me at the post.

Thank you all for belonging to The American Legion.

December Commanders Notes for Newsletter

We have run into a situation where we now have an opening on the Executive Board, due to this we will be holding a special election to fill this vacancy.  This will serve as the notice to the members; we will hold an election on January 22, 2018 from 7:00 am till 6:00pm the same day.  Ballots will then be counted and a new Executive Board member will be announced that night at the Post Meeting.  Nominations are now open and will use the same nomination form as regular elections, meaning it must be filled out by the person seeking office and signed by five (5) Legion members in good standing.  If you have questions or comments please call or email 68commander@gmail.com to get answers.

January 22, 2018 we will be holding a Volunteer appreciation dinner, starting at 6:00pm it will be roast beef, mashed potatoes, green beans, dinner roll, salad, and dessert for anyone who was gracious enough to volunteer in any aspect for The American Legion throughout the year.  It’s the least we can do for our great volunteers who keep this place running.  If you haven’t yet volunteered it’s not too late, contact any of your post 68 officers to get a volunteer spot.

Thank you all for being members of Lysle Rishel American Legion Post 68 in Hutchinson KS.  Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Commander's Notes for November

We are having our annual Thanksgiving Day meal again this year, it will be like the last several, a full lunch including all the sides and ending with pies.  Like the previous years there are several sign-up sheets out around the building so everyone can put down their name and number of guests in their party.  Veteran’s Day will be another busy day, starting with rolls and coffee at The American Legion at 7:30 am, Sons of the American Legion will be serving their chicken fried steak annual lunch at 11:00 am, and ending the evening at The Post with the early bird dinner Italian buffet from 5:00-7:00pm.

Also on Veteran’s Day morning come out the Fairlawn and help put up the flags in honor of all the Veteran’s out there starting at 7:00am.

Then on November 12, head out to the Legion for another breakfast, this one from 7:00-11:00 am and put on by the American Legion Riders Chapter 68.  Free for Veteran’s and free will donation for others.

As you can tell we have lots going on, this is in addition to our regular hamburger nights, bingo nights and such.  So please head down to the Post and enjoy an activity or two, and enjoy the weather before it turns cold! Of course, we are still pushing for everyone to pay their 2018 dues, membership is the life of the organization. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please call or email anytime.

Commander's Notes for October

All Local and Department American Legions are given target dates for certain membership percentages, as of September 12 we should have been at about 50% of our 2018 quota of 800 members.  I’m proud to say we hit that target, the next target date and is October 13th and the target percentage is 55%, we are not quite there yet and need to keep working, so please if you haven’t already renewed for 2018 or know someone that has not yet renewed please ask them to do so.  Not only do the numbers matter at the local and National levels but their dues help us maintain our ability to help local Veteran’s and keep all our Children and Youth, and all other Post activities thriving.

Thank you to all those new volunteers that have stepped up to help with Hamburger Nights, Bingo Nights, and everyone who worked the State Fair booth, you will never not know just how important or how appreciated it is.

We are still accepting pictures for the digital memory board, please submit them via email to 68commander@gmail.com or bring them to the Post office and we will scan them into the computer here.

As always if you have any questions or concerns please call or email anytime.

Commanders Notes for August

We are starting to accept dues for 2018; the Early bird dinner is scheduled for November 11th, Veterans Day.  Pay early and come out and enjoy comradeship, a good Italian cuisine, and a relaxing evening out.  Even if you don’t have an early bird stamp on your card, you’re still welcome to come out and enjoy the meal at a small cost.

August brings us The American Legion National Convention, this year held in Reno, Nevada.  I know there is a group of Post 68 members going this year, safe travels and I’m sure it will be fun.  Also those going on the National Legacy Run, I wish a safe and satisfying ride.

The Department Vice-Commanders homecoming will be held immediately following the Eisenhower Pilgrimage on Saturday October 14, 2017, in Abilene KS.  The lunch is $12.50 and you must RSVP by October 10th.

Our day to work the State Fair booth is Saturday September 9th, 2017.  If interested, email or call and we will get you on the list of volunteers.  All volunteers will receive an admission ticket and parking ticket.

Bingo is in need of volunteers, especially callers, if interested in volunteering, call or email and we will get you on the rotation, the post depends on those that volunteer and the money from Bingo nights.  We don’t say it enough, but Thank You to ALL our volunteers.

As always if you have questions, concerns, or comments feel free to call or email anytime.

Commander's Notes for July

I’ll start by wishing everybody a fun and safe July 4th, we will be out watching the fireworks and celebrating with everyone else so there will be no Bingo on July 4th. Thank you all for understanding.

We had a great showing of support when the Kansas Legacy Run stopped in South Hutchinson at the memorial that is being built there.  Overall Post 68 members turned in a total donation of $2,000 towards this year’s Legacy Run total, very proud to be a member of Post 68.  Reminder that the American Legion Family Homecoming is being held at Wichita Post 4, 816 N Water Street Dinner July 22nd at 7:00PM. Bring items for a Child Welfare Auction; Cost of the dinner is $15 per person/$3.00 children (under 10).

We are attempting to try something new, July 19th we will have a family meeting, everybody is invited, and it will have an open table type meeting feel to discuss anything that is brought up. It will start at 7:30 on Wednesday July 19th so mark your calendars now!

We will have karaoke in the Clubroom July 8th from 7:00pm till midnight!

Bingo is in need of volunteers, especially callers, if interested in volunteering, call or email and we will get you on the rotation, the post depends on those that volunteer and the money from Bingo nights.  We don’t say it enough, but Thank You to ALL our volunteers.

Reminder we are still looking for pictures of members in uniform so we can scan them in and put them into a digital picture for display on our new video screens, if you have one, you can send it to 68commander@gmail.com or bring it in and we will scan it and save it here at the post.  As always if you have questions, concerns, or comments feel free to call or email anytime.

Commander’s Notes for June

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of those that have helped make this Post what it is.  Without our members we would not be a successful Post, so thank you to all past and present members for what you do or have done.  Elections were last month as well, so congratulations to all the officers of the Legion, Auxiliary, and Sons of the American Legion; it should be a great and exciting year.

This month we have the American Legion Leadership College that will be held in Concordia on June 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.  They are changing the format of the classes this year so it should be a great chance to learn more about The American Legion at the Post level.  This year we were able to send 26 boys from Reno County to Boys State, thank you to everyone that helped with our luncheon or sponsored a boy.  As of now, we are sitting at 80% of our quota for yearly membership, I know I don’t have to tell everybody how important membership is and what it means to the Post.  If you know anybody who can belong, bring them in with you, show them the Post.  Reminder you can rent the post for your social events, weddings, or parties.

We are looking for pictures of members in uniform so we can scan them in and put them into a digital picture for display on our new video screens, if you have one you can send it to 68commander@gmail.com or bring it in and we will scan it and save it here at the post.  As always if you have questions, concerns, or comments feel free to call or email anytime.
