PROOF OF ELIGIBILITY REQUIRED FOR LEGION

MEMBERSHIP

 PROOF OF ELIGIBILTY Please send a copy of your military seperation documents to the Post ASAP!

It has been learned recently the guide for the IRS agents conducting audits of veterans organizations includes language indicating every American Legion Post must maintain a copy of every member's DD 214 or other evidence of honorable military service during our organization's membership eligibility periods. The penalty for not having a copy of each member's honorable service is $1,000.00 per day. It's easy to see that even the most successful Post would go broke in short
order if it was fined a thousand dollars a day because it can not provide an auditor instant proof every member is eligible to belong to the American Legion. Therefore every member is asked to provide their Post a photocopy of their DD 214 or other proof of honorable military service. It is also an opportunity to turn this situation into a positive thing. For more
than fiftyyears National and Department Headquarters has recommended maintaining a copy of every member's discharge papers. Why? Primarily as a service to safely maintain a copy of each member's records in case they are needed in applying for any veterans benefits and especially for grieving families faced with making funeral arrangements for their veteran.
Military records do contain personal and confidential information such as social security numbers which can be blackened out by the veteran before giving their Post a photocopy of their discharge. The only things really required are the person's name, dates of service and character of discharge. Every member is obligated to provide their Post proof of their eligibility for every member is requested in order to protect their Post from a thousand dollar per day fine if their Post is audited. If you are not certain where a copy of your discharge is, or cannot find a copy there are several ways to obtain one: contact the US National Archives on line at http://www.archives.gov/st-louis/military-personnel/ ,many veterans registered their discharge with their County Register of Deeds upon discharge, the Kansas Adjutant General's Archives (785-274-1099) have copies of most veterans who were Kansas residents when they entered military service and the Kansas Commission on Veterans Affairs (785-296-3976) may have a copy if discharged after 1992. Or if the veteran has filed for VA benefits the service organization that assisted them may have a copy.

Here is a link to the form to request your records from the above site.

Members that use Verizon for their cellular service provider should take a copy of their DD-214 in to a Verizon store. They have a discount program for Veterans. 15% for monthly service and 25% for accessories. (It dropped my bill $17.00)

We need help cleaning the Legion Hall after Bingo each Wednesday and Saturday at 8:00 AM.

14 June 2016

Memorandum for Record

The purpose of this memorandum is to inform Post Commanders and Post Adjutants of the manner in which a Kansas Life Member (KLM) will be processed as of July 1, 2016.  As of July 1, 2016 the Kansas Life Membership Plan will be changed to require each Post to submit $18.50 to the Department for each KLM.  A second change will be the termination of Life Member Credit Memo.

A Post has the option to pay $18.50 from its own funds or require the KLM to pay $18.50.  In either case the Post Adjutant will submit to the Department $18.50 along with the 2017 Department and American Legion Record card for KLM members.

If the Post elects not to pay $18.50 for each KLM, the KLM has three options:

(a)  Let membership lapse;

(b)  Pay Post dues at current rates.

(c)  Become a National Member for Life (PUFL)
